Foreign Language Dictionaries

A good dictionary is essential when you are learning a foreign language. For every foreign language, however, there is a wide range of dictionaries available from which the student can select. Here are some features to look for in a foreign language dictionary.
Thorough definitions
Only very rarely does a word really only have one simple meaning. Every entry in the foreign language dictionary should provide multiple definitions for each word. It is especially helpful if the dictionary also includes any regional variations in meaning (including the geographic locations where the word has this alternate meaning) as well as information on usage of the word in slang, vulgar or obscene contexts.
Pronunciation
Your foreign language dictionary should provide the pronunciation for the word in a clear manner that you can understand. Here, also, a quality dictionary may include alternate regional pronunciations if the word is articulated in a different manner in a specific area where the foreign language is spoken.
Breaking things down
If the foreign language requires conjugation, declension or other important linguistic or grammar changes during use, a good dictionary should include material breaking these concepts down in terms that you can follow. This material often appears in a separate section from the definitions.
A legend or key
Your foreign language dictionary should also provide a key or legend that clarifies the meanings of any symbols used throughout the dictionary's definitions. This key often appears in the front or back of the dictionary.
A good dictionary is a useful resource when you are learning a foreign language, but make sure that it has all of the features you need so that you can understand how to use it. You do not want a dictionary that confuses you; otherwise, the foreign language may seem too hard to master. Find a good dictionary written with your level of knowledge in mind, and you have a companion in your exploration of language studies that lasts through your whole education.
