Learning a Foreign Language

Learning a foreign language is not only fun and educational, but increasingly necessary in a multicultural world. There are many careers that now require a second or even a third language. Although learning a new language in adulthood is not as easy as learning one in childhood, there are many things a new language student can do to make the learning process easier.

Starting small

It is important not to get discouraged when first confronting a new language. Starting with simple, everyday phrases is helpful. Repetition is essential for both memorization and for perfecting one's pronunciation.

Flash cards: a great vocabulary tool

One tool that many students use with success is a colorful collection of flash cards. Each flash card contains either an image or a word in a foreign language, while the other side contains the English translation. Flash cards are used for both solitary and group study.

Reading and speaking: two different worlds

While learning to read in a foreign language is very important, a student should not forget to learn about pronunciation. If words are not pronounced correctly, a student is often misunderstood. Fortunately, if one does not have access to native speakers of a language, there are many Internet sites and recordings to help perfect an accent.

These days, learning a foreign language is a task that everyone should tackle. A few minutes of devoted study per day is often enough. The lifetime goal of fluency in a foreign language (or two) is easier to achieve than one might think.
