Why Learn a Foreign Language?

There are so many interesting courses of study to choose from that you might wonder, "why learn a foreign language?" Following are some reasons why studying a foreign language is especially interesting and fun.
A world of film, comics, hobbies and music
Are you a movie buff? If you only speak one language, you are probably missing out on thousands of great foreign movies that do not include subtitles. Imagine going to an Indian or Japanese market and having the ability to choose whatever movie appeals to you, without worrying about not understanding it. On the other hand, maybe you love comic books. In that case, Japanese "manga" comics are sure to appeal to you, but if you do not understand Japanese, this world eludes you. Maybe you are a knitter or crocheter. Did you know that some of the most important knitting magazines are in either French or Japanese? Without the ability to decipher these languages, you are missing out on a wide range of fashionable patterns. Finally, learning a foreign language makes you able to appreciate popular music from all over the world. Whether it is salsa or souk, understanding the words to a song is a great and empowering skill to have.
No news is bad news
Another reason to learn a new language is to understand international newspapers and radio news programs. Having the ability to read and listen to perspectives from foreign countries gives you an unparalleled perspective into what is going on around the world.
A great reason to learn a foreign language is that it opens your mind to a world of possibilities. And along with that, speaking another language is fun.
